Almost every team who visits the House of Black has been invited to play dodgeball with the Robowranglers. These teams all very quickly learned, the Robowranglers don’t just play dodgeball… we play Ultimate Extreme Robowrangler Dodgeball.
How do you play? What makes it extreme? I’m glad you asked!
We play on a regulation basketball court. Along the line at the center of the court are 6 to 10 dodgeballs. Our dodgeball of choice is the Poof Foam Basketball (which was used as an FRC game object in 2006).
The players are divided up into two teams. We typically select two captains of comparable ability/experience and they pick teams. If mentors play they usually do not participate in the draft, but will join teams “as they feel like it” after the games begin.
Rules subject to change if the referees feel like changing them.
Rule are more likely to be changed if the referee gets bored… so keep it exciting.
Most common rule change when the referee gets bored? “NO BOUNDARIES!”
Players must start each match touching the Baseline on their side of the field, and must remain touching the baseline until the referee says “GO!”.
At the start of each match, after retrieving a ball off the Center Line, players must move behind the Neutral Zone Line on their side of the field before they can throw the ball. (No grabbing a ball off the line and bouncing it off your buddy at close range).
Players must stay inside the boundary lines of the court at all times unless they are retrieving a ball.
You can move forward past the Center Line, but at no point can cross past the Neutral Zone Line on the opponent’s side of the field. (Yes, there is a neutral zone in the middle of the field which both teams are allowed to enter).
If you get hit by a ball - you’re out.
If you throw a ball and an opponent catches it before it hits the wall or floor - you’re out.
Players who are OUT should stand behind their team’s Baseline in the order that they went OUT.
If you catch a ball thrown by an opponent before it hits the wall or floor - one person from your team can come back into the game.
If a ball deflects off the floor, or wall and then hits someone - the person hit is NOT OUT.
If a ball deflects off the floor, or the wall and then is caught by someone - the person who threw it is NOT OUT.
If a ball deflects off another ball (either in the air, on the ground, or held by a player) and it hits someone - the person hit is NOT OUT.
If a ball deflects off another ball (either in the air, on the ground, or held by a player) and then is caught by someone - the person who threw it is OUT.
The game ends when all the players from one team are OUT.
JVN… this sounds pretty typical. This is not at all extreme… I’m very disappointed in the Robowranglers.
Stop interrupting me. There’s more…
At any point during the match, the referees may introduce “peas” to the gameplay. They can roll them towards either team, at their discretion.
VEX foam 4” balls. You can REALLY whip them. You’ll feel them when you get hit. If one of the Robowranglers from the baseball team throws them - I get out of the way. If D-Row is on the court… he is a one-man-weapon-of-mass-destruction.
If you catch a PEA thrown by an opponent before it hits the wall or floor - TWO people from your team can come back into the game.
If you throw a ball (either Pea or Dodgeball) into the basketball hoop over the Opponent’s Baseline (you know, the one on the far side of the field) - EVERYONE on your team can come back into the game.
Have Fun. Make Friends. Chase Excellence.
The rules change slightly each time - but those are the basics.
Anyone want to come play?
